Frequently asked questions

Who can become a member of lexo.tax e.V.?

Anyone with income from employment, pension, maintenance, social benefits, rental property or investments in Germany. Self-employed or business income is not covered – a Steuerberater (tax adviser) handles those.

How much does membership cost?

An income-based annual fee from €59 to a cap of €429, plus a one-off €15 onboarding fee. For couples filing jointly, only one fee applies.

Is there a minimum membership period?

Yes, one calendar year. You can terminate at the end of any year with three months' notice.

How long does the return take?

Once all documents are uploaded, we typically file within 2–3 weeks. The tax office issues the Steuerbescheid after another 4–12 weeks.

Can I file retroactively for prior years?

Yes. If you weren't required to file, you can voluntarily file for the past 4 years. If you were required, the standard limit is 4 years – special cases may go further back.

Do you speak English?

Our official advice is provided in German. We can answer questions and explain documents in English – just let us know when you book a call.

How do I send my documents?

Via our encrypted member portal, by email or on paper. Whatever works for you.

What happens if the tax office disagrees with the return?

We review your Steuerbescheid and file an appeal (Einspruch) at no extra cost where it makes sense.

Are you tax advisers (Steuerberater)?

No. lexo.tax is a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein – a German tax-help association regulated under § 4 No. 11 StBerG. For non-employment business income you need a Steuerberater.
