Since 1 January 2025, taxpayers have been able to submit their tax return for 2024. However, processing in the Finanzämter only begins from mid-March. The reason for this is that companies, banks and insurance providers have until the end of February to transmit their tax-relevant data to the tax authorities. Without these documents, the tax return cannot be fully completed.

When is an early submission worthwhile?
Those expecting a refund should submit their tax return as early as possible to receive their money sooner. Digital tax returns via ELSTER are given priority processing. However, submission can also be delayed if new tax-free allowances and lump sums first need to be integrated into the Finanzamt software.
When does a late submission make sense?
If a back payment is expected, it may be sensible to postpone the submission of the tax return. This allows time to build up financial reserves. As a rule, taxpayers have to wait about two months for their tax assessment notice (Steuerbescheid). Complex cases or missing documents can extend the processing time to up to six months.
Which deadlines apply?
- Self-filers: Submission by 31 July 2025
- With a tax advisor or Lohnsteuerhilfeverein: Extension until 30 April 2026
Early submission to the tax advisor is advisable, as appointments are often no longer available shortly before the deadline. Those who prepare their own tax return should choose the best time based on their individual financial situation.
